Dec 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena said today at a press conference held in Colombo that his Ministry will implement the National Teacher Transfer Policy from the beginning of next year.

The policy aims at establishing a balance in teacher distribution for national and provincial schools in the country.

Accordingly, 3,100 teachers who have served in the same national school for over 20 years and 9,300 teachers who have served in a national school for over 10 years will be transferred to other schools from the beginning of next year.

Proper teacher transfer policy was not effective for the 343 national schools and most of the national schools are overstaffed, but the teachers are not transferred to nearby under-staffed schools that are under the provincial councils, the Minister pointed out.

Under the new policy, the teachers will be inter-transferred between national and provincial council schools.

According to Sri Lanka's power devolution arrangements, the central government runs 330 national schools while the provincial councils run the other 9,000 some schools in the respective provinces.
